I keep forgetting to update this, so here goes.
We got a few eggs last week, and I was able to go in and pick a couple up so that we could mark and measure them. It was a great experience. They candled three of the eggs yesterday, and unfortunately none of them were fertile. There is still at least one more that will be candled in the next few days I believe. The cranes whose eggs were infertile will hopefully lay more clutches so we can get some fertile eggs - I want some chicks!
Saturday I drove to Western Illinois University to attend an enrichment workshop. I went for a girl I work with because she was unable to attend. It was interesting and I learned some information on enrichment that I believe will be helpful in future jobs. It was fun taking the company vehicle and going on a mini "business trip."
Today I had Skyline for lunch thanks to my mom and the post office!
Hope you all are doing well.

Hi Elizabeth - I like this post, but I have a question. What is candling?
ReplyDeleteThanks, Charlee
That is a good question! Candling is when you hold the crane egg up to a light, kind of like a flashlight in this machine, and you can see the inside of the egg. If the shell is really thick and dark it is harder to see what is inside, but depending on how much light shines through the egg you can tell if there is a baby crane inside. On thin, light colored eggs you can sometimes see a little heart beating. On all eggs you can also see the air sac which allows the chick to breathe inside the egg. Depending on the size of the air sac you can tell if the chick is developing.
ReplyDeleteThanks Liz. You have the best job in the world!
